Who is exempt from the exams
Not everyone has to take the exams. Exemptions are set in Art. 18(4) of the Law on Citizenship and Art. 53(8) of the Law on Aliens.
Citizenship (Art. 18(4))
- people aged 65 or over
- people with a 0–55% work-capacity level
- people of pension age with a high or medium level of special needs
- people with severe chronic mental and behavioural disorders
Permanent residence (Art. 53(8))
- people aged 65 or over
- people with a 0–55% participation (work-capacity) level
- people assessed as needing individual support
- people with severe chronic mental and behavioural disorders
- children
Other cases
On some permanent-residence grounds (Lithuanian descent, family member of a citizen, etc.) the law sets no exam requirement. If you are married to an exile or former political prisoner, citizenship needs only the Constitution exam (Art. 19). If you already hold a state-language category certificate, you do not need to take the language exam again.
If no exemption applies to you
